First of all though, we thought we’d take a look at why we celebrate Mother’s Day. It’s an occasion that we celebrate every year, but many of us have no idea where it actually came from. So, let’s take a look into how Mother’s Day originated here in the UK.

Why Do We Celebrate Mother’s Day?

To put it simply, we celebrate Mother’s Day to appreciate and give thanks to our mothers. Originally referred to as Mothering Sunday here in the UK, the initial origin of Mother’s Day in this country dates back to the 16th century. It’s been celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, but in some countries such as the US, it’s celebrated on the second Sunday in May. While we use the terms interchangeably, Mother’s Day in the US and Mothering Sunday in the UK actually have different origins. Here in the UK, the occasion initially started as a religious day to give thanks to the Virgin Mary, and required people to visit the main church in their local area, known as the ‘mother church.’ Over the 16th century, Mothering Sunday became a widely celebrated event, where people would return home to visit their local church, making it an occasion for families to reunite and bring offerings of thanks. However, around the 1930s it began to get less popular in Europe. This was until WWII, when the Americans and Canadians felt the crucial need to give thanks to their mothers while they were away at war, thus still celebrating the day. As a result, the British began to follow suit, leading Mother’s Day to be a key holiday on the UK calendar to this very day.

When it comes to Mother’s Day gifts, the tradition was usually flowers. This is because workers would pick wildflowers on their way home to visit their mothers.
